Project Overview

A black-framed glass box on a handsome brick home in Bowdon, Cheshire. Glass overhead, glass on the corner and a pair of wide sliding doors to the garden — the result is a bright, open space that feels part of the garden while still sitting quietly against the original brickwork.

The brief

The client had a mature, beautifully kept garden and wanted to enjoy it from indoors all year round. The brief was simple to say and harder to deliver: as much glass as possible, as little frame as possible, and nothing that would fight with the character of the house. The existing brick — a warm mix of reds, oranges and buffs — was the star, so the glazing needed to frame it, not compete with it.

A glass box that lets the garden in

We designed, manufactured and installed the glass box in-house. It is glazed on its garden elevation and corner, with a sloping glass roof running back to the house, so daylight reaches the space from above as well as from the side. Looking up from inside, you see sky and the canopy of the trees beyond — a very different feeling from a conventional solid roof.

The corner is where a glass box earns its keep. With glazing on two sides meeting at a slim black post, there is no wall to interrupt the view, and the garden wraps around the room. It is a detail that photographs well and, more importantly, one that the client will notice every day.

Wide sliding doors

The main elevation is a pair of large-format Cortizo sliding doors in black aluminium. The sightlines are deliberately slim, with a narrow central interlock, so the glass dominates and the frame recedes. Sliding doors are the right choice for a space like this: they do not need swing clearance, they take up no floor area when open, and they give a generous, uninterrupted opening onto the terrace on warm days.

Finished in a matt black, the frames pick up the dark detailing already on the house — the gutters, downpipes, fascias and the black wall lantern — so the new work reads as part of the building rather than something added to it.

Working with the existing brickwork

Good glass boxes are won or lost at the junctions. Here the glass roof meets the brick walls with a neat black upstand, and the guttering and downpipe are carried through in the same colour as the frames. Wherever glass meets masonry the lines are tight and consistent, which is what gives the finished job its crisp, architectural look.

Beside the box, an arched steel-look window repeats the black frame colour and adds a traditional note to the elevation. The old and the new share a palette, which is exactly why the two sit so comfortably together.

Why aluminium

Aluminium is strong enough to carry large panes of glass on very slim profiles, which is what makes the minimal look possible. It is also durable and low maintenance: a powder-coated finish does not need repainting, and a wipe-down with the glass is all the frames ask for. For a space that will be used every day and looked at from every room that faces it, that is the right material.

Glass boxes across Cheshire

Bowdon and the surrounding villages are full of well-loved brick homes with long, mature gardens — exactly the kind of property where a glass box makes sense. Glass reads as a light touch against traditional materials, and it lets the original house stay the focus. We have completed glass boxes, glass links and steel-look glazing across Cheshire and the wider North West, and we manage everything from design and manufacture through to installation with our own teams.

Like all our work, this installation comes with our 10-year guarantee, as standard.
