Steel-Look Aluminium Doors & Windows, Crosby

Full-height steel-look aluminium doors and fixed screens for a red-brick home in Crosby, north of Liverpool. Glazed from floor to head across the whole rear elevation, the result reads as a crisp black-framed glass wall by day and, at dusk, as a lantern set into the brick — the open-plan kitchen, dining and living space now opens straight onto the terrace.

The brief

The client wanted the character of traditional steel-framed glazing — fine sightlines, a strong grid, dark frames against warm brick — without the maintenance, cold-bridging and cost that come with genuine steel. The glazing had to run the full width of the room with as little between the interior and the garden as possible.

What we did

We designed, manufactured and installed a run of steel-look aluminium doors and fixed screens across the rear elevation, with a matching glazed return to the side and a band of high-level glazing above. The slim thermally broken aluminium profiles carry the same proportions as heritage steel, so the grid holds its rhythm right across the elevation, while modern double glazing keeps the space warm year-round.

Inside, the black framing sits comfortably with the suspended fireplace and the dark feature wall, and the fine sightlines mean the garden reads as part of the room. With lighting set into the brick piers either side, the glazing is just as striking after dark as it is in daylight.
