The Brief
A homeowner in West Lancashire wanted to transform the rear elevation of their property to take full advantage of its stunning countryside views. The goal was to maximise natural light, create a stronger connection between the interior and exterior, and give the home a modern, clean aesthetic.
They requested:
- Large, slimline sliding doors with minimal sightlines
- A flush indoor–outdoor threshold
- A frameless glass balustrade to protect a sunken seating area from the wind
- An internal “Crittall-style” sliding screen to divide the open-plan space in colder months without losing light
The emphasis throughout was on openness, seamless transitions, and high-end contemporary design.
The Process
1. Design & Collaboration
We worked closely with the client’s builder to integrate the glazing with the wider construction works. Precise measurements and planning ensured the door system would create the clean, uninterrupted views the client wanted while remaining structurally sound.
2. Product Specification
We selected Cortizo slimline sliding patio doors for their ultra-slim aluminium profiles and ability to span large openings. The frames were finished in RAL 9005 matt black to complement the home’s contemporary style.
For the exterior seating area, we specified toughened and laminated glass panels set within a concealed channel system, providing maximum strength with minimal visual impact.
Inside, the Crittall-style sliding screen was designed to operate smoothly and blend seamlessly with the interior décor.
3. Installation
The sliding doors were installed with an integrated drainage solution, allowing for a fully flush threshold between internal and external flooring.
The frameless balustrade was carefully engineered to withstand wind loads while maintaining a clean, unobstructed look.
The internal sliding screen was aligned and tested to ensure effortless operation, giving the client the flexibility they asked for.
4. Finishing & Detailing
The final detailing included precision sealing, weatherproofing, and quality checks across all glazing elements. The glass edges were polished, the frames perfectly finished, and all components tested to ensure smooth, long-lasting performance.
The Final Result
The finished project transformed the rear of the home into a bright, open space with sweeping countryside views framed by ultra-slim aluminium profiles.
- The four-panel sliding doors across two elevations flood the home with light and create a seamless flow to the outside.
- The flush threshold eliminates visual barriers and enhances the modern aesthetic.
- The frameless balustrade protects the sunken seating area without interrupting the view, maintaining a clean, minimal look.
- The internal Crittall-style sliding screen gives the client the ability to switch between open-plan living and a cosy winter snug while still retaining natural light.
- The matt-black frames and crisp detailing bring a refined, contemporary feel throughout the space.
